Later today I will turn on my
television and shortly thereafter, my head will explode. No, I’m not going all
Jesus on you and predicting my death, I’m talking about the return of football
today. That’s right, the RETURN. Not the “it’s almost here!” or the “we can
watch these games that aren’t as good and don’t actually mean anything”. No, my
friends, FOOTBALL IS REALLY BACK! That means for the next few (few months)
Sundays we can wake up, throw on a jersey, and just take in the day of true
American heroism. I don’t know about you, but I am extremely excited about
this. However, I just have a few questions to ask about this season we’re about
to enter, if you would indulge me.
1. Why is everyone acting like RG III
was hurt by some vicious hit while running a read option play? All summer long I’ve
heard people questioning the Washington quarterback’s style of play, pointing
time and time again to his knee injury as why he should run less. Ummm…this is
how Griffin got hurt:
So if anything, we should be questioning the safety of taking snaps under center. He’ll be just fine.
2. Why is it such a forgone conclusion
that Oakland will be the league’s worst team? I’m not saying Pryor will lead
them to the playoffs, but look at Jacksonville. They’ve got a less talented
roster, a worse offensive line, and a less mobile quarterback. As for the Jets,
they’re starting a rookie quarterback who only won the job because Mark
Suckchez got injured. Not to mention I couldn’t name more than five players on
that team. C’mon people, cut the Raiders some slack.
3. What is it going to take for Russell
Wilson’s brilliance to be recognized? The majority rule on 2012’s rookie
quarterbacks is Luck 1st, Griffin 2nd, and Wilson 3rd.
Wilson is great in the pocket (with a sexy deep ball), ridiculous on foot, and
just generally made of magic. You’ll see.
4. How many games into the season before
Tom Brady wins MVP? This off-season, the star power leaving New England was
well-chronicled. Many have wondered if Tom Brady will be able to sustain his
success with the young, inexperienced receivers now populating New England’s
roster. To that, I say this: I challenge you to name two receivers from the
Patriot’s 2003 Super Bowl team. With a strong defense and the same mystical
talent as always, Tom Terrific will be your 2013 MVP.
5. Is it possible for both teams to lose
a NFL game? sounds like a weird question, right? Yesterday I realized that when
Denver and Baltimore kick off tonight, I won’t be rooting for either team. In fact,
I would be ecstatic if they could just both lose. Has there ever been a 0-0 tie
in the NFL? But because someone probably will score at some point, I say Baltimore wins.
No matter what the answer to these
questions are or may be, the important thing is that tonight at 8:30 p.m.
eastern, the NFL is officially back. Don’t worry, I was having withdrawals too.
Regardless of who your favorite team is, we can all enjoy a spectacular
touchdown catch or a great tackle. Welcome back, football. We missed you.
